| Notes |
- His daughter (Vi Bicknell) notes:
Aged about 14-15 he lied about his age and joined the Black and Tans (this is borne out by the discrepancy between his registered birth date and the date given on his ID document
Joined the Royal Mail Steam Packet ship "Desna" on 24/01/1919
Was in the Royal Irish Constabulary. Enlisted in 1921 (Ref 852095 Page 126b)
He worked as a chauffeur for Lord Hall in Surrey. He met his future wife, Rhoda, when he was working as head chauffeur for the Tiarcks family. He later became a groundsman at Barkers of Kensington and at Northolt Racecourse.
After marriage they lived in Streatham, Bayswater and Sudbury (Middlesex), but then separated in about 1928. There were several reconciliations and the family moved regularly - including to South Harrow and Greenford (Middlesex).
The Bicknell family evacuated during the Second World War (1939-1945), firstly to Brownhill (Staffordshire) and then to Stilton, near Peterborugh.
He virtually separated from Rhoda in later years and there is evidence that he had another partner and they lived in Gerrards Cross.
- Registered as a merchant seaman with a birth date of 20/05/1900 (cf previous note re lying about age)
ID no. 840409
Served on the Royal Mail Steam Packet Co. ship "Desna" (1912-1933) from 24/01/1919
- 1921 - Chauffeur to Commander Scott, naval officer
